Synopsis
Set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together we have no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant OKLAHOMA!
Character Breakdown
CURLY (24-30): Upper-baritone (C3 to F#4). Comfortable dancer. He is a confident cowboy with the kind of affable personality that people are drawn to. He has a stubborn streak that keeps him from letting Laurey know how much he cares for her. Has a confident swagger and deserves it; he is the most handsome man in the whole county.
LAUREY (18-22): Soprano (C4 to A5). Strong dancer. She is a innocent yet spunky farm girl. She has been raised by her Aunt Eller. Like Curly, she is too stubborn to let him know how she really feels about him.
AUNT ELLER (50-70): Alto/Mezzo (G3-F5). Comfortable dancer. Big voice, slightly crude in tone. She is a sturdy farm woman who has managed to make a life on the frontier for herself and her niece, Laurey. She’s a big-hearted woman but can also be tough when she has to be.
ADO ANNIE CARNES (18-22): Mezzo-belt (C4 to F5). Comfortable dancer. She is a boy-crazy farm girl. She's too naïve to know how to handle herself around men, which gets her into trouble. Although she has strong feelings for Will, her head is easily turned by any man who pays attention to her.
WILL PARKER (Mid-twenties): Light baritone/Tenor (D3 to F4). Strong dancer. Able to do rope tricks is a plus. He is a simple, good-natured cowboy and in love with Ado Annie. He may not be the brightest guy around but his high-spirited energy and affectionate personality make him a friend to everyone.
JUD FRY (+/-35) Rich Bass/baritone (D2 to Db4). Jud is Aunt Eller's hired hand and has his eye on Laurey. His sullen, volatile nature frightens Laurey. His social skills are limited. Although Jud is the villain of the story, there is an underlying emotional complexity that may make him sympathetic.
ALI HAKEM (35-40): High baritone. Sense of comedic-timing. He is a traveling salesman who says he’s from Persia. His merchandise is often bogus. He fancies himself a ladies' man and when he gets too entangled with a girl, he simply moves on to the next town. Though we aren’t sure how much of what he says we can believe, he’s a likeable fellow.
GERTIE CUMMINGS (18-24): Distinctive laugh. She is a silly flirt with the most annoying laugh in the Territory. She's too full of herself to realize that that most people would rather not be in her company. She has eyes on Curly.
ANDREW CARNES (50+): Baritone. He is Ado Annie's protective father. He is a farmer and doesn’t feel very kind to cowboys in general.
IKE SKIDMORE (35+): He owns the ranch where the Box Social takes place.
CORD ELAM (25+): A cowman
SLIM, FRED - Cowman friends of Curly's
ELLEN, KATE, SYLVIE,ARMINA, AGGIE - A group of fun-loving farmer's daughters
ENSEMBLE: Farmers, cowmen, territory folks. Singing and dancing required for most ensemble roles.
The score is classically Rodgers & Hammerstein with vocal harmonies in the chorus and lyrical melodies. It requires the ability to sing with a orchestra and has lively dance numbers.
